Outreach Ministries

He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth Him hath mercy on the poor.

Charles Carroll Middle School Food Pantry and Resource Center

Members of St. Christopher's volunteer monthly at the Community Food Pantry at the "new" Charles Carroll Middle School at 6130 Lamont Drive here in New Carrollton. On the fourth Saturday of the month, the Pantry freely provides not only fresh food and groceries, but also a 'boutique' that offers clothing, household items, books, etc. Additionally, Community Partners provide housing counseling, identify or provide resources for health needs, senior citizens, youth services, as well as spiritual resources and prayer. The Food Pantry and Resource Center is organized by the Faith Based Collaborative Outreach Group (http://www.thecollaborativefbcog.com/), which has now opened a second location for intake weekly at Carrollton Elementary School. Visit the Collaborative at the link above to learn more about the outreach services. Parishioners are encouraged to take advantage of this community resource, and youth and adults alike are invited to become a volunteer (excellent community service hours resource).

Fight hunger in our community by donating to the Help-By-Phone food pantry. Please leave donations of food in the designated location in the narthex of the church. All donations must be canned or dried and in sealed containers. Recommended items include baby food, cereal, coffee, tea, cocoa, dry milk, pancake mix & syrup, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, rice, tuna, mac & cheese, pork & beans, vegetables (red, green & yellow), fruit and hearty-style soups. Food items are pre-packaged and delivered to deserving families on Fridays (at Trinity Moravian Church at 7011 Goodluck Road in New Carrollton - next to Lamont Elementary School). For further information, please contact Tommie Lawrence at (301) 577-8489.

Meals on Wheels

MOW provides low-cost nutritious meals for the sick and elderly. It is not sponsored by St. Christopher's, but we have a history of members volunteering for this particular ministry - dating back to our founding members in the mid-1970s.  The program is supported by the Department of Family Services of Prince George's County, MD.

Social Worker

Peggy O'Connor, a PG County social worker has office hours at St. Christopher's on the second Tuesday of the month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. She can also be reached any time on her office phone at 301-209-5134.

Melwood

One of our outreach initiatives is with Melwood, a nonprofit organization that, among other things, provides job coaching to those with differing abilities to enable them to find job opportunities in the community.  St. Christopher's is a job coaching site where Melwood provides us with cleaning services on Tuesday mornings.  In the almost three years that we have served as a job coaching site, over 30 individuals have gone on to find employment.  Indeed, this initiative meets the goal of our Ministry Model to extend outreach to New Carrollton and beyond!

New Carrollton Library

St. Christopher's developed  a long-range partnership with the New Carrollton Library, which was seeking a physical space in which to run some programs while their building is being renovated.  By donating space and exchanging ideas with the library staff, St. Christophers enabled several helpful programs to be offered to the community.  The library's presence has brought favorable neighborhood attention to our church, and many neighbors now cross our threshold each week.
