Who We Are

St-Christopher-Symbol-Palm

St. Christopher's Episcopal church is now a

small suburban congregation with a membership

of approximately 110 families. The congregation

is somewhat unique in the Diocese of Washington in

that it has a great diversity of races, cultures,

and nationalities.

The members and friends of St. Christopher's

Episcopal Church welcome all persons, regardless

of ethnic heritage or religious backgrounds, and

every baptized Christian who partakes of the

Lord's Supper in his own church is welcome to

receive Communion at our altar rail.

Our History

St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, founded in 1953, has a rich history.  In July, 1956, West

Lanham Mission held regular services above the West Lanham firehouse and the communicants were referred to as "The Firehouse Gang". The congregation consisted of predominantly young parents with small children. In 1957, the communicants chose the name "St. Christopher's".

On August 1, 1957, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new building on land that was given by the Diocese as part of a diocesan expansion, and on November 3, 1957, Bishop Dunn laid the cornerstone. The new church-in-the-round was completed and dedicated in August 1965. The purpose of the design was to seat all persons close to the altar, to be convertible for many uses, to permit "praying and playing", and as communal fellowship. The significance of the central altar recognizes that all we do is in the sight of God and nothing we do is hidden from Him. The altar, pulpit, lectern, Bishop's Chair, sanctuary chairs and the altar railing were all built by men of the parish.
